Are YOU ready?

Are YOU ready?

Earthquake Preparedness in California.

Living in The Bay Area means that earthquakes are guaranteed events. Absolutely. The only questions are when and how big. At CERT, we like to say the best time to prepare for a disaster is before one happens. We encourage each of you to prepare now for the earthquakes that will absolutely occur.

What to do?

  • Practice Drop, Cover and Hold On Practice with your household.
  • Identify safe spots in every room – under sturdy tables, desks, or against inside walls. Know the danger spots – windows, mirrors, hanging objects, fireplaces and tall, unsecured furniture
  • Arm yourself with free information. Cal.gov publishes, Homeowner’s Guide to Earthquake Safety in English and Spanish
  • Secure your space Secure bookcases, TVs, artwork, top-heavy items and smaller items that may break or become dangerous projectiles
  • Prepare now to participate in national Shake Out day – third Thursday in October.
  • Make a plan for your family, including your pets.

Earthquake Warning California is the country’s first publicly available, statewide warning system that could give residents crucial seconds to take cover beforeyou feel shaking. Managed by the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), Earthquake Warning California uses ground motion sensors from across the state to detect earthquakes before we can feel them. The MyShakeApp is available to download for free at the Apple and Google Play stores in both English and Spanish. Please visit earthquake.ca.gov to learn more about the latest tools and resources and how to use them.

What would it be like to be in your home for days without water, electricity and phone service? Yes, without cell service.

Earthquake safety involves being prepared and knowing what to do. Practicing earthquake safety at home and creating a disaster safety kit before the next earthquake is crucial to your family’s safety. Organize disaster supplies and strengthen your house against earthquake damage. Always be ready to extinguish fires, take steps for fire prevention and early detection. Prepare emergency supplies in advance.

We offer FREE preparedness information and instruction all year. Let us know your interest and we’ll reserve a space for you.
